DO NOT ALWAYS TRUST LAWYERS

It probably sounds strange coming from me, a lawyer, telling you not to always trust lawyers. However, too many times I hear from potential clients I did not know what I signed, I did not know what I agreed to pay, I did not know what I agreed to do or what the lawyer was doing.

First, never sign any document which has any blanks or that you did not read. Blanks are an invitation for disaster for you. Read every word of every document that you ever sign. If you do not understand a provision, a paragraph or even a word, ask that the provision, paragraph or word be explained to you. Keep asking until you fully understand the meaning and impact on you.

When hiring a lawyer, you have to have a written fee agreement. Any lawyer that tells you otherwise, do not trust. After you read that fee agreement, make sure you understand each paragraph. If you do not agree with any part of the fee agreement, tell the lawyer. If you can not reach an agreement, you may not want to be represented by that lawyer. Be on the lookout for provisions which permit the lawyer to charge you a monthly fee to review the file, an administrative fee or set an hourly rate if you discharge the lawyer.
